The Markets These Tours Visit
Advent Bazilika, in front of St Stephen's Basilica
The market on Szent István tér runs from 13 November to 1 January and gathers close to 100 Hungarian craftspeople. Its signature moment is the light projection on the Basilica facade, which runs every evening from 17:30 and repeats through the night. Advent Bazilika has been voted the best Christmas market in Europe by European Best Destinations several times, including the 2026 ranking.
It sits a 10-minute walk from Vörösmarty Square.
Vörösmarty Square and the Gerbeaud café
Vörösmarty Classic Xmas fills the square at the end of Váci Street, in front of the Gerbeaud café, from 13 November to 31 December. It is the classic downtown market, with craft stalls and a free children's train that runs on weekdays from 14:00 and weekends from 11:00. The craft stalls and the train close for good on 28 December while the square is rebuilt for New Year's Eve.
The Buda Castle market by Matthias Church
On Szentháromság tér next to Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, the Buda Castle Advent market is smaller than the Pest-side giants. Last season it ran from 28 November to 4 January, daily 09:00-20:00. The 2026 dates have not been published yet.
None of the tours compared here stops here, so add it to your own itinerary, ideally at dusk with the view over the river.
Óbuda and its ice rink
Advent in Óbuda opens on Fő tér in District III on 27 November, with an ice rink on the square plus concerts and family programmes at weekends. It is a neighbourhood market, away from the tour routes. Take the H5 suburban train from Batthyány tér to Szentlélek tér or Árpád híd.
No tour compared here visits it.
Gozsdu Udvar
The passage between Király utca and Dob utca in District VII hosts a design market from 4 to 23 December, open Monday to Thursday from noon and Friday to Sunday from 10:00. It skews handmade and design rather than roast chestnuts, and it fits neatly before dinner in the Jewish quarter. It is not on any tour route.
Szentendre
The riverside art town about 20 km north of Budapest dresses up from Advent to Epiphany, with an Advent market on Dumtsa Jenő Street, open-air events, concerts and exhibitions. The H5 suburban train from Batthyány tér takes about 40 minutes, or you let a heated electric car do it in comfort. The private e-car evening to Szentendre is the only catalog listing that includes it.
The table below lines up the season dates, hours and the catalog tours that actually stop at each market. Both big Pest markets open on 13 November and keep full daily hours until the holidays compress them.
